This Hamburg to Copenhagen bike tour joins two great port cities by way of the western Baltic, and three UNESCO World Heritage sites mark the route: the Speicherstadt in Hamburg, the old town of Lübeck and the chalk cliff of Stevns Klint.

Between them the scenery changes every day or two. The Holsteinische Schweiz brings lakes and beech woods, the coast beyond Lütjenburg brings beaches and piers, and after the ferry the Danish islands of Lolland, Falster and Møn spread out flat, with church towers and windmills as the highest points in sight.

History runs along the whole way. Lübeck was the leading city of the Hanseatic League, the merchant network that controlled Baltic trade for centuries, and its St. Mary's Church became the model for brick Gothic churches around the sea. On the Danish side, medieval town gates, frescoed village churches and Stone Age graves sit beside the route.

The riding is flat to gently rolling, with the most climbing among the Holstein lakes and the longest stage at Stevns. Two ferries belong to the journey: the Scandlines ship across the Fehmarn Belt and, in summer, the little boat from Falster to Bogø. Tickets for both, and for the train out of Hamburg, are paid on the spot.

You sleep in hand-picked hotels with breakfast, and your luggage goes ahead on every riding day, the ferry crossing included. The digital guidebook covers each stage, and trains can shorten the longest days.

Starting in Berlin instead? Our Berlin to Copenhagen bike tour crosses from Rostock and shares the final two days. Choose your dates, and we'll prepare the route from the Elbe to the Øresund.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, or a national ID card valid for travel. You cross from Germany to Denmark on the ferry on day 5, and border checks can take place at the port or on board.

No. You buy both tickets on the spot: the Scandlines ferry from Puttgarden to Rødby at the port, with a small extra charge for the bike, and the Ida ferry from Stubbekøbing to Bogø at the machine on the pier. Your luggage travels separately and waits for you at the next hotel.

The Ida ferry sails from May to September. If it is not running on your day, you ride from Nykøbing Falster over the Storstrøm Bridge to Zealand and on to Møn instead.

The day is then longer, and the guidebook includes this route.

On three days, a train can take over:

  • Day 2: take the train all the way from Hamburg to Lübeck.

  • Day 9: a local train from Store Heddinge to Køge cuts the longest stage.

  • Day 10: the S-train from Køge to Copenhagen replaces the ride.

Bikes travel only if there is space on board.

Yes. On the ferries your bike travels with a foot-passenger ticket, and on German regional trains it needs a bike ticket. Summer trains can be full, so plan the trip back to Hamburg with care: the direct trains from Copenhagen do not carry unboxed bikes. Check the rules with DB or DSB when you book.
