This self-guided bike tour in Denmark crosses the heart of Jutland, linking two cities with a chain of lakes, a cathedral town and a fjord. It starts in Aarhus, the country's second city, and ends eight days later in Aalborg, so there is no need to ride back.

Six riding days add up to 279 km (173 mi) with about 1,800 m (5,900 ft) of climbing. The route follows the Gudenå, Denmark's longest river, through the lakes around Silkeborg and Ry, then turns toward the Limfjord, the long arm of water that nearly cuts the north of Jutland from the rest of the country. Along the way you meet a mountain that is really a hill with a tower, a bog man from the Iron Age, a protected fjord full of birds and a small ferry across the water.

Most days are between 25 and 57 km (15 and 35 mi), with one longer day of 66 km (41 mi) that is broken up by the ferry crossing. The terrain rolls gently rather than flatly, and the lake days leave time for a museum, a swim or a long lunch.

You sleep in hotels and country inns in Aarhus, Ry, Silkeborg, Viborg, Skive, Løgstør and Aalborg, and we book them all for you. Your digital guidebook and GPS routes show every turn. Bike rental and a luggage transfer from hotel to hotel can be added when you book, and the bikes are collected in Aalborg, so the last morning is free for Aalborg.

For a coastal week elsewhere in the country, see The Best of Royal Zealand. Otherwise, pick your dates and set off from Aarhus toward the Limfjord.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tour ends in Aalborg, and trains between Aalborg and Aarhus take about 1 hour 18 minutes on the fastest services, with more than 30 departures a day. Your rental bikes stay in Aalborg, so you travel back without them. If you fly home from Aalborg Airport instead, a city bus runs to the station.

Yes, on day 6 a small ferry crosses the Limfjord between Sundsøre and Hvalpsund in about ten minutes. It is not part of the tour price, and your guidebook lists the times.

The route rolls through lake country rather than staying flat. Daily elevation gain runs from about 216 to 370 m (709 to 1,214 ft), and the first day from Aarhus to Ry and the day to Viborg are the hilliest. The shortest day, between Ry and Silkeborg, leaves the most time for sightseeing. An e-bike is a comfortable choice on the hillier days.

Your rental bikes are collected in Aalborg after you check out, so you can travel back to Aarhus by train without them.

This tour runs from Aarhus to Aalborg. The reverse direction is possible on request, but it changes the hotels and the order of the sights, so please ask before booking.
